Voting Question: Is it to late for me?: College Admissions in CA.?

21 July 2010, 10:01 am

I'm moving to Washington D.C. this month from Hawaii and I'm a senior so I have to get on applying to colleges and whatnot. Now my problem is, since 9th grade I have been in a small, 36 student private school and I have been slacking big time. All my teachers acknowledge my intellect but say I do not put effort into it. This has mostly to do with homework which I've been terrible at getting myself to do, but I'm changing that for year, and this time I won't be lying to myself. Anyway I was born in southern cali in Ventura county and I have a good amount of family and friends over there and I want to be a musician so thats another good reason why I want to go to college in california. Now you probably already noticed, my slacking in mainly 10th and 11th grade is going to make getting into my ideal college, UCSD, hard. I'm a C average student who's not very good with math naturally but other subjects I can excel at if I try and pay attention. I've taken the SAT only once but plan to take it 1-2more times. My first score was a 1630, which is alright, nothing that special to me, but my friends who are the top students and get straight A's have gotten lower scores than me =/ Whatever. Our private school offered only honors courses since 10th grade so I've been taking those. This year since I'm moving to Washington D.C. I'll obviously have a new school and I'm wondering, besides doing good which is a given, what can I do to increase my chances to going to UCSD? I want to major in sound engineering (I want to be a sound engineer for recording music and whatnot) When I apply to colleges I'm going to write a well written essay explaining my high school experience and whatnot but I was wondering, should I/do I need to take any AP classes this year to get into a UC college? My major would involve physics and I'm sure I could do good if I applied myself but I do not want to jump the gun and put a load on my back that I cannot carry. I know it is a little late to be doing good and 11th grade is the most important year, which I already screwed myself over in, but I'm determined to get into UCSD and if all else fails I guess I'll go to a junior college for a year and push myself and then try for UCSD or another University in southern cal. I love anyone who reads all of this and replies. Thank you so much.... Read More »
